Frequently asked questions

Q : What is the difference between saline implants and silicone implants?

R : All breast implants have a silicone envelope. They can be filled with either saline (sterile salted water) or with silicone gel. Saline implants are filled with saline during the surgery, whereas silicone implants are already pre-filled with silicone.

Q : Are silicone gel implants safe ?

R : Yes. Sant Canada evaluated all available data and approved the use of silicone gel implants for breast augmentation.

Q : What should I do if the implant ruptures?

R : Breast implant rupture is an important matter. An implant rupturs when the envelope of the prosthesis opens up. Patients with silicone gel implant rupture may or may not have symptoms. Certain risk factors are associated with breast implant rupture; those include aging of the prosthesis, trauma, significant compression of the implant during mammography, and direct injury of the implant during the surgery by surgical instruments.

Although your health is not in immediate danger, if you think that your prosthesis is ruptured or leaking, you should consult your plastic surgeon and get the prosthesis removed. Implant rupture presents usually without symptoms. Specific radiological imaging such as MRI can be obtained to confirm the rupture.

Q : Is the risk of breast cancer increased with breast implants ?

R : Published studies demonstrated that breast cancer incidence is the same in women with and without breast implants.

Q : Can I breastfeed if I have breast implants ?

R : Women with breast implants can breastfeed. They do not expose their babies to excessive quantities of silicone. The Medicine Institute concluded that there is not proof of an elevated rate of silicone or other dangerous substances are found in the breast milk of mothers with breast silicone implants. You will be able to breast feed after your breast augmentation. Your plastic surgeon will talk to you about it more in details, during your first consultation.

Q : Can I have a mammography after my breast augmentation surgery?

R : Screening mammography indications for breast cancer are the same in patients with or without breast implants. It is important for you to disclose to the mammography staff that you have breast implants. The technical staff will use special techniques to decrease the risk of implant rupture and to increase the resolution of this imaging modality.
